Hesitant Emancipator- Lincoln - 2916 Words

BU WR 150 Paper 3 The Hesitant Emancipator Never boring: simple words that describe the simple life of one of the greatest American Heroes of all time. Over the years we have come to understand the Great Emancipator’s struggles and his determination to push for a better future for his nation. In the blink of war, Lincoln came to the nation’s rescue. But was Lincoln really the Great Emancipator? Was Lincoln actually opposed to the slavery movement? Or did he not consider the blacks to be an equal race? Did he make an active effort to free the slaves? Or was the emancipation a never Lincoln’s priority? On the contrary, Trevino and Nelson (2006), opines that it may increase the risk factors for the leaders to rely upon the inexperienced members at the time of taking any serious organizational decision. On the other hand, as per the opinion of Trevino, Hartman and Brown (2000), in consensus decision making style the leaders seems to introduce their decision in front of other employees so that they can express their viewpoints by giving votes. This decision making style is regarded as the democratic style of determining the suitable organizational action. Such style also helps to reform the internal environment of the organization where everyone has the right to express their opinion and take active part in the or ganizational activity. However, Colley et al. (2005) said that this style can create conflict among the leader and the employees if the leader finds a particular decision suitable for the organization and the other employees go against it. Such scenario can affect the organizational environment as well. In the recent competitive business market, the modern organizations need to have one strong personality who can effectively take necessary organizational decisions by adapting the most ethical way (McClaren 2013). By maintain clarity among the employees about the organizational core values and principles and by taking the help of proper law, the leaders can make suitable decisions for their organizations. In order to maintain the ethical decision making process the theory of virtue ethics along with Kantianism theory can be applied. As per this theory, the importance of the individual employees seems to be the most important aspect at the time of making ethical decisions (Chin, Hambrick and Trevino 2013). The leaders seem to employ courage, wisdom, temperance and compassion in their decisions so that they can meet the ethical demands of their employees. By employing this theory, the taken decisions can avoid the negative aspects like selfishness, greed, jealousy etc. On the other hand, Kantianism theory puts the emphasis upon regarding the principles on which the decisions are taken (Ferrell, Fraedrich and Ferrell 2005). If the leaders take organizational ethical decisions by employing this theory, they can easily maintain the universal principles with which they can become able to show respect to all their employees. In this way, the leaders can motivate their employees to overcome t heir evil instincts by following the ethical way for the betterment of the organization. The implementation of these ethical models, the leaders can ensure the employment of suitable principles and virtue in their taken ethical decisions. In the modern organizations, three types of morality management are shown namely immoral management, moral management and amoral management. From the viewpoint of Chin, Hambrick and Trevino (2013), an immoral leader does not care much about principles and virtue at the time of taken any organizational decision. The main focus of such decisions is on personal gaining rather than in favor of the organization (Mathenge 2013). In such cases, organizational ethical rules are also overruled by the leaders. Such organizational decisions are generally taken by individual leader and without informing the employees. For example, if any leader turns down any employee all of a sudden in order to achieve its personal gain, it seems to be unethical and immoral decision making by that leader. On the other hand, Ferrell, Fraedrich and Ferrell (2005) opines that the moral leader seems to strictly follow the ethical aspect in both the cases of its personal decision making along with the decision, made for the benefit of the organization and its employees. The moral leaders regard the ethics and regulations for their organizational success. The moral management of the decisions follows the corporate governance laws with which they set a higher standard of ethical regulations before making any organizational decisions. The moral management of ethical decisions is also meant for the success of the organization but it implements this fact with regard to the benefits of the employees as well. Such decisions are made with opinions of the organizational of Board members along with the employees. For example, if a leader feels the need for some essential training sessions at their organization, it can take relevant decisions because it is meant for the betterment of the organization. From the viewpoint of Colley et al. (2005), the amoral leaders takes the middle path at the time of making any organizational decision as they believe that the ethical aspects are not at all important in de cision making unless and until the legal aspects and regulations are not overruled. These leaders often taken the ethical matters seriously at the time of taking any personal decisions like something related to any violation or donation to any charitable trusts etc. However, they do not regard the ethical aspects important at the time of making any organizational decision because according to them the ethical aspects have less impact in the present competitive business market (Ferrell, Fraedrich and Ferrell 2005). Such leaders often face dilemma among the ethical and unethical perspectives at the time of making any decisions. The best example is the organizations which produce powdered milk for kids. In spite of a number of drainage and salinity, menace control schemes being undertaken, the salinity and water logging problems positively persist and each year 40,000 hectares of irrigated land is lost to water logging and salinity. On the one hand, the nation needs more food to fulfill the demands of its increasing population while on the other hand, each year the cultivable commanded area (CCA) is decreasing due to this twin menace. Stress Stress. Is there an effective way to cure stress? Stress is an integral part of everyday life, influencing, if not controlling happiness, productivity and health. The complete absence of any stress results in death. Stress is known to cause a variety of psychiatric disorders involving anxiert and depression. More common of which include posttraumatic stress disorder, amajor depression, generalized anxierty, and multiple personality disorders. Hopefully will attempt to explain ways to cure ones illness's caused by Stress. Stress is an adaptive response. The more stress one puts on themselves the weaker their immune system then becomes. A weakened immune system will become susceptible to disease and injury. Stress is the body's reaction to an even that is seen as emotionally disturbing or threatening. To prepare for such an event, the body increases its heart rate and blood pressure; more blood is then sent to your heart and muscles, and your respiration rate increases. There are a variety of steps that stress will take biologically on your body. In the first stage of stress, alarm, the body mobilizes its "fight or flight" defenses, either to resist the stress-causing factor or adapt to it. When these neurons are stimulated by stress, they release transmitter norepinephrine which, in addition to arousing the brain, causes the activation of the c-fos gene in the target cells. The c-fos protein, in turn, is known to activate other genes that may produce prolonged changes in the function of the brain to stress is a key event in causing persistent psychiatric disorders following stress.

Overpopulation Problems

Before we move on to overpopulation problems, we need to know about the various factors that are responsible for this incessant rise in population. Significant improvement in quality of life and basic health services has resulted in decline in death rate, and at the same time has caused an increase in the birth rate. Continuous migration of people from underdeveloped areas to developed areas has triggered an unnatural growth in population in developed areas, thus, putting immense pressure on available resources. Our failure in understanding the problems caused by overpopulation in urban areas is reflected in unplanned growth of newer towns and cities. More importantly, a look at the projected population growth is even more horrendous, which in itself stresses on the fact that we are not learning from our mistakes. The worst thing about these problems is that they act as major hindrances in the process of development. Scarcity of Resources Available resources will not be sufficient to meet the demand of rising population. Only 3% of water on the planet is potable, so overpopulation problems will start with the lack of drinking water for millions of people across the globe. Land available for agricultural production is also shrinking, which means the amount of crop produced will decrease with time. If population increases and crop production decreases, a large part of population will be left to die of hunger. In fact, Thomas Malthus had predicted this problem of food shortage due to rise in population two centuries ago through his theory of population. Scarcity of resources will not just be restricted to food and water, it will also affect various other walks of life, including health services, jobs and many basic amenities. Health Problems The amount of waste produced by increasing population will hamper the waste management program in several countries. Untreated waste and poor hygiene will result in the spread of diseases. A large population will make the spread of contagious diseases even more easier. Health resources available with us will not be sufficient enough to cater to the needs of the huge population in case of an epidemic, and the death toll will be difficult to handle. Entire planet will experience large scale outbreaks of diseases, which will wipe out a large part of population by itself. Environmental Issues Increase in population will also increase the anthropogenic activities which cause global warming and related climate change. Larger the population, more will be the environmental issues that we will have to deal with like pollution and deforestation. We have proved time and again that we won't hesitate to encroach upon the natural surroundings and destroy them if we don't have a place to stay. This will result in loss of habitat for various species and cause a severe ecological imbalance on the planet. It would be foolish to expect that we will be safe from these overpopulation effects, as all lifeforms subsisting on this planet, including humans, are dependent on each other, either directly or indirectly. These overpopulation problems would not have affected us if we had unlimited land and resources, but that is not the case. Topographic Maps Topographic maps (often called topo maps for short) are large scale (often greater than 1:50,000) maps that show a wide range of human and physical features of the Earth. They are very detailed maps and are often produced on large sheets of paper. The First Topographic Map In the late 17th century, French finance minister Jean Baptiste Colbert hired surveyor, astronomer, and physician Jean Dominique Cassini for an ambitious project, the topographic mapping of France. He [Colbert] wanted the kind of maps that indicated man-made and natural features as determined by precise engineering surveys and measurements. They would portray the shapes and elevations of mountains, valleys, and plains; the network of streams and rivers; the location of cities, roads, political boundaries, and other works of man. (Wilford, 112) After a century of work by Cassini, his son, grandson, and great-grandson, France was the proud owner of a complete set of topographic maps the first country to have produced such a prize. Topographic Mapping of the United States Since the 1600s, topographic mapping has become an integral part of a countrys cartography. These maps remain among the most valuable maps for government and the public alike. In the United States, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is responsible for topographic mapping. There are over 54,000 quadrangles (map sheets) that cover every inch of the United States. The USGS primary scale for mapping topographic maps is 1:24,000. This means that one inch on the map equals 24,000 inches on the ground, the equivalent of 2000 feet. These quadrangles are called 7.5 minute quadrangles because they show an area that is 7.5 minutes of longitude wide by 7.5 minutes of latitude high. These paper sheets are approximately 29 inches high and 22 inches wide. Isolines Topographic maps use a wide variety of symbols to represent human and physical features. Among the most striking are the topo maps display of the topography or terrain of the area. Contour lines are used to represent elevation by connecting points of equal elevation. These imaginary lines do a nice job of representing the terrain. As with all isolines, when contour lines lie close together, they represent a steep slope; lines far apart represent a gradual slope. Contour Intervals Each quadrangle uses a contour interval (the distance in elevation between contour lines) appropriate for that area. While flat areas may be mapped with a five-foot contour interval, rugged terrain may have a 25-foot or more contour interval. Through the use of contour lines, an experienced topographic map reader can easily visualize the direction of stream flow and the shape of the terrain. Colors Most topographic maps are produced at a large enough scale to show individual buildings and all streets in cities. In urbanized areas, larger and specific important buildings are represented in black though the urbanized area surrounding them is represented with a red shading. Some topographic maps also include features in purple. These quadrangles have been revised solely through aerial photographs and not by the typical field checking that is involved with the production of a topographic map. These revisions are shown in purple on the map and can represent newly urbanized areas, new roads, and even new lakes. Topographic maps also use standardized cartographic conventions to represent additional features such as the color blue for water and green for forests. Coordinates Several different coordinate systems are shown on topographic maps.
